That Green Jacket

The winner of the esteemed Masters tournament Bubba Watson received his forest jacket today, and with it, questions abound!

"...formally awarded since 1949, and informally acquired by the champions for many years before that, the green sport coat is the official attire worn by members of Augusta National while on the club grounds, and with it, each Masters winner becomes an honorary member of the club. The recipient of the green jacket has it presented to him inside the Butler Cabin soon after the end of the tournament, and the presentation is then repeated outside near the 18th green in front of the spectators. Winners keep their jacket for the first year and after their first victory, then return it to the club to wear whenever they visit...The green jacket is only allowed to be removed from Augusta National by the reigning champion, after which it must remain at the club...By tradition, the winner of the previous year's Masters Tournament puts the jacket on the current winner at the end of the tournament."

The jacket is actually made in Ohio, be it with cloth from Georgia. Cincinnati-based Hamilton Tailoring Co. has been producing the jacket for Augusta since 1967. It takes about a month to produce each three-button, single breasted blazer , which is fitted with brass inscribed buttons depicting the Augusta National logo.

Some other juicy little tidbits:

-Rye green: Pantone 342

-Owner's name is stitched on the label inside

-The original purpose of the green jacket was to identify club members as "reliable sources of information" to visiting non-members, and to let waiters know who picked up the check at dinner.

Brunello Cucinelli Trunk Show
