Resort Wear Is Here: Part 1- Women’s

January 17, 2018

With January in full swing, we know you are ready to travel to warmer climates more than ever! A.K. Rikk’s has hundreds of new resort wear arrivals to help you feel and look your best as you escape the snow and gloomy weather. Karina (Sales Manager) has picked three potential resort wear looks that we know you will love (modeled on Personal Stylist, Hannah).

This first look is perfect for a casual day out shopping, exploring, or going on an excursion. The fabric on this Chloe shirt adds visual interest and is a breathable linen. The terra cotta sweater is perfect for layering with varying temperatures throughout the day. Pair this with a bag from The Row and a pair of cute scalloped flat sandals from Chloe, and you are all set for a day on your feet or kicked back on a deck for brunch.

The next look is great for both day and night. The top and bottom are patterned separates from Alice + Olivia. The vertical stripe detail is extremely slimming for every body type, and the separate pieces allows for versatility in your current wardrobe. The colors and bow tie on the collar characterize the quintessential resort wear nod to “nautical” style, inspired by sailor and yachting themes, but in a subtle and current way. Throw on a pair of Stuart Weitzman loafers, and a Chloe cross body chain purse and you are ready for a dockside dinner!

Want to elevate your resort wear look a little bit more? Throw on this striped crop top and wide leg pant by Alice + Olivia for a late candlelit dinner on the beach. The wide leg is universally flattering and creates a fantastic high-waist silhouette for the crop top to be featured but still tasteful. This oversize bag by The Row is perfect for throwing in an additional jacket or sweater for a chilly night, and it is a great introductory price-point for one of our favorite brands! The nude Stuart Weitzman shoe is classic and simple, allowing the lace details of the pant to stand out more.

From head to toe, your style can be not only weather and trip-appropriate, but unique, fashionable, and luxurious at the same time. Not seeing what you need or love? We have hundreds of more options in store! Contact your personal shopper to set up an appointment. He or she will start pulling looks that are customized to you and your trip!

Behind the Seams: Meet Carol Steele

January 15, 2018

Today as a part of our Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s series we would like to introduce you to one of our Personal Shoppers, Carol Steele. Carol has been a valuable part of the A.K. Rikk’s family for 5 months! She says, “When I style someone, I like to have them do a double take. Even everyday pieces can have a special touch!” We asked Carol about her background in the industry and what makes her tick during her interview!

How did you get into the fashion industry?

It was really just a stroke of fate! I was in the luxury world before working at the Grammys and Golden Globes. They decided to change directions and I didn’t see myself taking that direction with them, so I decided to pursue other luxury opportunities in the Grand Rapids area. That is when I found A.K. Rikk’s and instantly fell in love!

How would you describe your fashion?

My taste is definitely timeless and elegant with an edge!

What is your favorite brand?

L’Agence is my favorite brand! Their denim has such a great fit, it’s truly engineered to make you look your best!

What was the first piece you fell in love with at A.K. Rikk’s?

It was a Chloé mint green cape, it was just such a classic and feminine piece!

Who are your style icons?

I have a few! Carmen Dell’orefice, because she is still rocking it at 86 years old! Giselle Bundchen, because my friend is her stylist and she does amazing work! Gigi Hadid, she is exotic and a head turner. What I love about the three of them is that they are all head turners at different ages and stages in their lives. That is what is so inspiring to me!

What are you most likely doing when you’re not at work?

I am working out, spending time with my 5 kids, and cooking! I am having a ball with Blue Apron right now!

That concludes this Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s interview. Next time you stop in, be sure to say “hello” to Carol!

Behind the Seams: How to keep your resolutions with Billy Lanford

January 3, 2018

Today as a part of our Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s series we sat down with our Director of Operations, Billy Lanford to discuss New Year’s Resolutions. We asked Billy to share the key to success  in keeping your resolution.

Most people create a resolution such as, “I’m going to lose 15 pounds this year”. They have a loose strategy on how they will attain this goal and if they don’t see immediate progress they quit!

How should someone start?

The first step would be to come up with a vision of who you want to be or what you want to attain. This person could be real or made up, just as long as you can envision it. Research it. Find out who that person is. Then take an honest inventory of who you are and where you’re at. Once you find out who that person is, the next step is to make small consistent actions that are attainable. Ask yourself, “what can I do consistently?” Find one thing that you can hold yourself accountable to and be disciplined until you are confident you are sticking to that change- then add another consistent action. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too much change at once, because it won’t be easy to transition. It’s imperative that you need to be willing to work for it.

How do you hold yourself accountable for this?

You can find someone that is in the mindset you want to have, but they have to be brutally honest with you. Or you can hold yourself accountable. Get a calendar of the month and put a red X on the days that you do what you said you would do. See how many days you can string together. The goal is to build momentum for yourself. “You either live with the pain of regret or the pain of discipline.”- Bill Curry. This is one of my favorite quotes because I think it perfectly explains the reality. If I don’t do everything in my power to make my goals happen, I am going to reflect on my life at 80 full of regret. I choose to live with the voice of discipline. Compromises will end your intention to keep your resolution. I hear the voice of compromise all the time when I am at the gym, “Dude, you’ve earned it- do less today!” On those days that I hear that voice I end up pushing myself to do more!

What’s something you want someone with a resolution to remember?

The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size.”- Albert Einstein. 80% of New Year’s Resolutions are broken by February 1st. If you fail or quit you will kick yourself over and over because you had a glimpse of who you can be. You can’t “unsee” that vision. You do have value, and you CAN do it!

What is your New Year’s Resolution?

I am taking my current foundation and expanding on that. Every morning I read ten pages a day. That has allowed me to read 20-24 books a year for the last 13 years. This year, I am going to add onto my foundation by selecting a specific subject to study deeper on top of my regular reading. Each quarter the subject will change, I will read 2 books a month on that subject. by the end of the year I will have read about 48 books! I will have so much more to give!

That concludes this Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s interview with Billy Lanford. Stay tuned for our next Behind the Seams!

Behind the Seams: Hannah Wilson

December 28, 2017

Today as a part of our Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s series we would like to introduce you to one of our Personal Shoppers, Hannah Wilson. Hannah has been a valuable part of the A.K. Rikk’s family for 8 months! “Being from New York, I was so happy to find a place that fosters creativity and being unique!” We asked Hannah what brought her to A.K. Rikk’s and what makes her tick during her interview!

How did you originally discover A.K. Rikk’s?

I heard of A.K. Rikk’s through word of mouth when I first moved to Grand Rapids. I remember walking into my interview and immediately feeling the warm energy from the team. Everyone was so welcoming, my nerves about interviewing instantly went away!

What was the first piece you fell in love with at A.K. Rikk’s?

It was a pair of Valentino Rockstud pumps in a camel color! The moment I saw them I knew I had to have them!

What is one of your favorite memories during your time at A.K. Rikk’s?

Definitely our 30th Anniversary celebration; being able to attend such a beautiful event to honor the store’s incredible achievement was something I will never forget.

What was the first piece of luxury fashion you ever owned?

When I graduated college my parents bought me an iconic Chanel bag as a graduation gift! I’ve loved Chanel since I was little and have read a ton of her biographies. A lot of people don’t realize that Gabrielle Chanel was forced to wear black and white to school as a child to identify the fact that she was an orphan. She built a fashion house with the two main colors being black and white, so wealthy people would start wearing them too. I think that idea is brilliant.

Who are your style icons?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are my style icons! I love their cool twist on minimalistic style. They are also all about proportions and I love oversized everything!

What are your three favorite pieces in your wardrobe?

My Chanel Bag, my Chloé Nile, and my Saint Laurent red crocodile bag… can you tell I love accessories? I want to build a huge collection to pass on eventually.

That concludes this Behind the Seams with A.K. Rikk’s interview. Next time you stop in, be sure to say “hello” to Hannah!

What to Wear for the Holidays (Part 2)

December 16, 2017

Can you believe it’s December, already? We are right in the middle of the most wonderful time of the year- family and friends, holiday parties, amazing food, special traditions, etc. As we mentioned in “What to Wear for the Holidays (Part 1),” the last thing you want to think (or worry) about is what to wear when you have so many other things to enjoy this season. Jordan and Hannah, two of our personal shoppers, are back at it again with some “his” and “hers” outfits that are perfect for all your holiday party occasions- Office Holiday Party, Cocktail Holiday Party, and Formal Holiday Party.

Office Holiday Party:

Office parties can be a little bit tricky- you don’t want to be too dressed up, but you also don’t want to look like you do day in and day out in the office environment. Consider turning your style up a notch with this crimson red color. The womens’ dress is one you will reach for again and again- it looks good on its own or with a fur, overcoat, scarf, etc. The dress is also covered up enough for the office, but the texture adds a little bit more volume to match the occasion. The men’s sport coat is a very popular item and is easy to elevate with the turtleneck without trying too hard.

Cocktail Holiday Party:

Ready to grab your cocktail and let loose a little bit more? It’s time to attend the cocktail holiday party in style with these amazing looks that utilize a mix of varying textures (faux fur, velvet, cracked gold, satin, etc.) to amp up your attire for the party occasion. The blue tint in the faux fur coat helps to make it look “real” without the real price tag, and the dress is so easy that you’ll be going back to it throughout the season. The mens’ look has some special elements that elevate it from “office” to “cocktail” by adding the cuff links, bow tie, and suspenders, but it is still classic in the main elements that you’ll wear time after time (like the velvet jacket).

Formal Holiday Party:

It’s time to really bring the glamour for your formal holiday parties and winter black tie events. Don’t be afraid to wear more than black- the mix of navy with the black will add an extra element of sophistication and interest in both the men’s and women’s looks (mixing the two is no longer a faux pas, we promise). You’ll be the best dressed couple at the party. Additionally, you’ll want to be perfectly tailored and styled to look your best for this occasion, so make sure to work with us on customizing these pieces to fit you like a glove. Your outfits will be truly one-of-a-kind with this attention to detail!

The Launch of Danse Lente

December 12, 2017

Here at A.K. Rikk’s we are always striving to be the first to discover new trends and upcoming designers. After a great week in New York with the women’s buying team we are excited to bring you a new women’s accessories label specializing in handbags and small leather goods, Danse Lente. With it’s contemporary price point and luxury feel, it is the bag for every women this season.

Danse Lente, meaning “slow dance” in French, brings you quality leather goods inspired by modern architecture and contemporary aesthetics. “Each piece is conceived in depth in order to create a purpose built product that will also create a unique experience to its predecessor. There is a playful and curious element to each design that appeals to a wide range of audiences.” This London based brand  exclusively launched with Net-a-Porter and sold out within 72 hours.

The four styles arriving at A.K. Rikk’s this November are the Phoebe, Lorna, Johnny and Young bags. Danse Lante describes each bag in detail:

“The Phoebe is a structural bag with two compartments. Handle fastenings are inspired by the spiral binding of a notebook; the oversized spiral is the key element of this style and evokes more of a feminine touch to the collection.”

“The Lorna is an oversized “bucket bag” with a sculptural outer shape and leather lining, complete with an internal pouch to keep little treasures safe. Key features include a punctuated keyhole fastening, indicative of Danse Lente‘s signature design detailing. This un-conventional fastening has been crafted to allow the wearer to interchange the bag’s iconic keyhole strap with different color options, adjustable into three different lengths giving versatility to the style, allowing the wearer to update their bag season on season.”

“The Johnny is an eye-catching structural piece, inspired by Constantin Brâncusi abstract sculptures. A focal point of the ‘Johnny’ style is an exaggerated D-ring in the center of the hexagonal shape, representing the strong influence of modernist art. A geometric silhouette with a cool, origami-style opening the Johnny has a polished silver hardware and a contrasting cream top handle.”

“The Young combines elegance, modernity and sophistication with a minimal clean cut. Key features include a punctuated keyhole shaped fastening, indicative of Danse Lente‘s signature design detailing. This un-conventional fastening has been bragged to allow the wearer to interchange the bag’s iconic keyhole strap with different color options, adjustable into three different lengths giving versatility to the style, allowing the wearer to update their bag season on season.”

We are excited to share this new, contemporary brand with our city. Contact your personal shopper to pre-order your Danse Lente bag today or schedule your November visit to see bags in store.

Toys For Tots: We Give You Give

November 24, 2017

As Thanksgiving weekend is upon us, we get the opportunity to reflect on what we are thankful for and take action during this holiday season to positively affect people in our community. As a former Marine, Toys for Tots has always held a special place my heart. From experiencing the family’s reactions during distribution, to the people donating their new and unwrapped toys, nothing brings out the holiday spirit like helping others experience the joy of Christmas. The whole thing really puts what we do at A.K. Rikk’s into perspective. I’m honored this holiday season, as this is my 10th consecutive year working with Toys for Tots and I’m fortunate to continue that work here at A.K. Rikk’s.

A.K. Rikk’s is proud to partner with the United States Marine Corps Reserve and their annual Toys for Tots Campaign for our second year in a row. We are collecting new, unwrapped toys and monetary donations to benefit children here in West Michigan.

As a company, we feel fortunate to be in a position where we can give back. Giving back is a part of our culture, it’s what we do. Last year we collected over $15,000 for Toys for Tots and our goal is to surpass what we did last year!

Anyone can help, whether it is with a monetary donation, item donation, or time spent with the less fortunate, there is no better way to spend the holidays than by giving back to others. Tis the season to rally together and make our community a truly special place. Thank you for your help!

As we continue to celebrate our 30th anniversary, Toys for Tots is celebrating their 70th year! Started in 1947 in Los Angles, Toys for Tots has grown to a holiday staple that affects millions of families each year. Last year the Toys for Tots campaign distributed 18 million toys to 7 million children across 792 communities covering all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Their goal is to deliver a message of hope to less fortunate children. When Marines distribute toys to families in need, they aim to showcase the parents as the heroes, not themselves. It’s a perfect example of the giving nature we strive to embody. Everyone deserves to experience the joy of Christmas, it is something that both organizations care deeply about.

Want to be apart of this amazing cause?

This year we have the famous Toys for Tots donation box located at the front of the store. Please stop in and drop off your new, unwrapped toys through December 18th or visit the link below to give your monetary donation. We will be accepting monetary donations through December 5th. All money raised will be used for our annual toy buy partnered with our good friends at Mejier.

What to Wear for the Holidays (Part 1)

November 20, 2017

It’s our favorite time of the year- family and friends, holiday parties, amazing food, special traditions, etc. The last thing you want to think (or worry) about is what to wear. Let our personal shoppers at A.K. Rikk’s help simplify just that! Jordan and Hannah have put together some “his” and “hers” outfits that are classic, stylish, and perfect for all your holiday occasions. In this rendition, we’ll cover the general holiday events- Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. Once you explore these looks, we’ll send some more inspiration your way in Part 2 (Office Holiday Party, Cocktail Holiday Party, and Formal Holiday Party).

Whether dining in or out, these looks are perfect for a Thanksgiving with friends and family. Both have a great mix of textures with elevated, earthy tones. The layers add versatility (coat/sweater on the men’s look and scarf on the woman’s look) depending on the weather, and the elasticity in the woman’s dress allows for a little extra room for pumpkin pie. Although the colors are more neutral, the pump and bracelet bag add a little femininity and formality to the woman’s look. The jean (especially when paired with the loafer) in the men’s look adds a casual, but still formal look for this holiday event.

Our personal shoppers pulled together some Christmas looks that are warm and cozy, but still sophisticated for a classic holiday at home. According to Jordan, in these looks, you can “sit by the fire, open gifts, and even chop down a tree.” The L’AGENCE pant in the woman’s look is a new rich, chocolate brown color with plenty of stretch, and the men’s trouser is a great alternative to jeans. Holiday parties, however, may require a more formal look- you’ll have to stay tuned for Part 2!

New Year’s Eve:

It’s almost 2018, so start it off with a bang and looking your best. For New Year’s Eve, these looks will elevate your style and really make you stand out. Many men have a tuxedo jacket, but are unsure of how else to wear it other than in a traditional fashion- why not throw it with a pair of jeans and t-shirt for a modern, cool vibe? The woman’s look is cute and fun, but a little sexy when you take off the jacket. You’ll be the perfect pair, turning heads in these outfits that pair classic pieces with a little bit of glitz (both men’s and woman’s shoe and woman’s look purse and earrings).
