Toys For Tots: We Give You Give

November 24, 2017

As Thanksgiving weekend is upon us, we get the opportunity to reflect on what we are thankful for and take action during this holiday season to positively affect people in our community. As a former Marine, Toys for Tots has always held a special place my heart. From experiencing the family’s reactions during distribution, to the people donating their new and unwrapped toys, nothing brings out the holiday spirit like helping others experience the joy of Christmas. The whole thing really puts what we do at A.K. Rikk’s into perspective. I’m honored this holiday season, as this is my 10th consecutive year working with Toys for Tots and I’m fortunate to continue that work here at A.K. Rikk’s.

A.K. Rikk’s is proud to partner with the United States Marine Corps Reserve and their annual Toys for Tots Campaign for our second year in a row. We are collecting new, unwrapped toys and monetary donations to benefit children here in West Michigan.

As a company, we feel fortunate to be in a position where we can give back. Giving back is a part of our culture, it’s what we do. Last year we collected over $15,000 for Toys for Tots and our goal is to surpass what we did last year!

Anyone can help, whether it is with a monetary donation, item donation, or time spent with the less fortunate, there is no better way to spend the holidays than by giving back to others. Tis the season to rally together and make our community a truly special place. Thank you for your help!

As we continue to celebrate our 30th anniversary, Toys for Tots is celebrating their 70th year! Started in 1947 in Los Angles, Toys for Tots has grown to a holiday staple that affects millions of families each year. Last year the Toys for Tots campaign distributed 18 million toys to 7 million children across 792 communities covering all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Their goal is to deliver a message of hope to less fortunate children. When Marines distribute toys to families in need, they aim to showcase the parents as the heroes, not themselves. It’s a perfect example of the giving nature we strive to embody. Everyone deserves to experience the joy of Christmas, it is something that both organizations care deeply about.

Want to be apart of this amazing cause?

This year we have the famous Toys for Tots donation box located at the front of the store. Please stop in and drop off your new, unwrapped toys through December 18th or visit the link below to give your monetary donation. We will be accepting monetary donations through December 5th. All money raised will be used for our annual toy buy partnered with our good friends at Mejier.

Here at A.K. Rikk’s we love any reason to find the perfect outfit for the weekend. Labor Day is almost here and is a reminder a break from work is important and so is being ready for “layering” season. To find out what to wear for the holiday weekend and into the fall season we sat down with two of our Personal Shoppers, Hannah Wilson and Alexander Mars, to ask about their Labor Day weekend plans, what they’ll be wearing, and how they will transition items from day-to-night as we leave summer and enter into fall.

Today as a part of our Behind The Seams with A.K. RIKK’S series we’d like to introduce the Founder and Owner, Rick Gaby. Rick has made a powerful impression on all of our lives over the last thirty years. Personal Shopper Matt Sova said it best, “I’ve been with A.K. RIKK’S for fourteen years and truly enjoy seeing Rick each and every time he comes to the store. I’ve always enjoyed his sense of humor, personality, and the way the store lights up when he is here.” A.K. RIKK’S has always been more than a store, it is a family. For instance with the celebration of Rick’s sixtieth birthday all the clients, friends, and employees came together to give their sentiments in sixty cards. It is with great pleasure that we give you insight into Rick’s perspective as a business owner through this series of questions in our Behind The Seams with A.K. RIKK’S interview.

Today as a part of our Behind The Seams with A.K. RIKK’S series we’d like to introduce our President, Jim Murray. He has been a part of our family for eleven years. Jim has traveled all over the world collecting A.K. Field Notes and understands the importance of appreciating where you live. He explains, “Many people ask me why we do not have a store in New York City, Tokyo, Atlanta, or Chicago and the answer is – we’re proud to be in Grand Rapids. Not to say we won’t have other stores at some point but every store we will ever open will be a part of the community that it lives in. That is what makes the store special.” Get to know what holds the most influence on Jim’s perspective through a series of questions in our Behind The Seams with A.K. RIKK’S interview.
