What I want for Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2013

Since countless commercials, ads, and websites have taken the liberty of telling dudes what to get their ladies for Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d just put out there what I want for Valentine’s Day.

Don’t waste your money on the open-heart diamond collection from Kay Jewelers. Every kiss begins with A K. All right, all right- I’m done. I’ll just cut to the chase.

Let’s tackle this give-her-lingerie thing. You’re really cute and all, but I’d rather get something fun that I can wear under blouses and sweaters and not just for you. Helmut Lang has these adorable asymmetrical bras that add something extra to an outfit without screaming, “HEY LOOK AT MY BRA!” Plus I bet they’re just as fun to take off.

Let’s go on vacation. Before you roll your eyes, I realize that asking for a vacation for Valentine’s Day is a little much. I’m not going to sit here like a princess expecting you to pay for an entire trip, but getting me something that lets me know that you want to travel with me is incredibly sweet. Cynthia Vincent’s entire resort collection screams beach, waves, and sand so when I pull that caftan out of the box, first I’ll kiss and thank you, but then I’ll ask you to pass me my laptop, we’re planning a trip.

Please don’t buy me some crazy diamond tennis bracelet that cost you multiple trips to the sperm bank as a donor. If you are going to get me jewelry, why not make it something a little less extravagant, but just as pretty? Marc by Marc Jacobs has some classic pieces, like their Katie Link bracelet, that I can pair with a variety of jewelry I already own.

Lastly, flowers die. They’re pretty, but they die. I mean, you can still get me flowers and I’ll like them, but they will die. Instead, try something creative and get me “flowers” but in a different way. rag & bone has a variety of spring pieces featuring bold florals. How fun would it be to get a bouquet of floral-printed pieces?! Pretty damn fun.

It’s just a little crush

January 7, 2013

Every once in a while, a jean walks into your life… on a FedEx truck. And it’s not just me. All the AK girls are lusting over these Lilly Polka-Dot Skinny Jeans by Marc by Marc Jacobs. Light-washed denim came back for another summer but in this case it collaborated with the polka-dot trend and created these beautiful babies. All right, I realize I’m getting a little weird, I’ll stop. But let me just say that these jeans are literally ready-to-wear and completely broken in and soft. If it were me, I’d pair them with an old white graphic tee to further the washed-out trend, but they would look very cute with a bright blouse or tank!

And I’ll leave you with this.

Sweater Weather

December 14, 2012

I’m not sure about you but I’m seriously so cold during the winter that I’m constantly wearing a sweater. I know some of you ladies are nodding your head, agreeing with me right now. Guys, I’m not sure why your body temperature is ten degrees warmer than ours, but good for you. I’m always cold. If I could shower in a sweater, I think I would. So if you wear them as much as I do, you’re going to need to know how to maintain your sweaters. Luckily Valet Magazine put out a guide to sweater maintenance and I’m here to summarize it for you:

De-Fuzzing: to get rid of pilling, get yourself a sweater stone that pulls the little guys from the threads, but leaves a smooth finish on the sweater.

Snags: fix a snag or loose thread by turning it sweater inside out and using a pin to pull the thread back into the inside of the sweater. Then knot the yarn close to the fabric and trim the excess.

Soften: Yes, there’s a way to fix the scratchiness of a sweater!! I wasn’t too far off when I said I wanted to take my sweater into the shower…

First hand-wash the sweater by filling your sink or bathtub 3/4 of the way with cold water. If you don’t have Woolite, add two spoonfuls of regular hair shampoo, stir, then immerse your sweaters into the water. Let it soak for 5 minutes. Swish around and work the suds through the fabric. Drain the water and rise with cool water to remove suds. Ball sweater slightly and then press out excess water.

Then, fill the tub halfway with lukewarm water and mix in two or three tablespoons of high-quality hair conditioner. Submerge the wool sweater for at least 30 minutes. Rinse the sweater throughly and once clean, lay onto a clean towel and roll up, pressing out the excess water. Unroll, smooth out any weird lines and wrinkles, and shift the sweater back into shape. Lay flat to dry completely.

Take good care of your sweaters and they’ll keep you warm and take care of you during these chilly months! If you’re lacking, A.K. Rikk’s has some terrific sweaters, men’s and women’s, that will definitely keep you cozy!

** UPDATE **

Thanks to Mary in Battle Creek, a “fiber artist and knitter,” we’ve recently learned that Woolite can remove color from some fibers and sweaters. She recommends using Soak or Eucalan for more delicate fibers. Thanks, Mary!

Spring is Just Around the Corner!

December 10, 2012

The weather outside is frightful, but our 2013 Spring Resort room is so delightful. Ok, so that had few too many syllables, but you catch my drift. As it’s getting progressively colder outsider, it’s getting hotter here at A.K. Rikk’s, figuratively speaking. Chris just finished setting up our Spring Resort room and forget eggnog; I’m craving a piña colada on the beach. We have so much fun, new, and colorful women’s clothing for spring. Cynthia Vincent, Haute Hippie, Marc by Marc Jacobs, J Brand, Tibi, and so much more!

So come by the store and get psyched about spring… or spring break! Stop by the bar, we’ll fix you a mai tai and send you upstairs and to the right toward the Spring Resort room!

David & Victoria for A.K. Rikk’s

November 9, 2012

David and Victoria Beckham are admired by men and women alike. We at the store admire them for being stylish trail blazers in their everyday life. David and Victoria are one of the most photographed celebrity power couples. It goes hand in hand that anyone should attempt to look good while attending events and work related appearances, but the rest of the world also gets to see them via the lenses of paparazzi.

In a most recent outing, the couple was photographed at their best. Here is a Posh & David Beckham how-to for all you fans out there. Knowing this is all just one shopping stop away, even Posh & Becks wouldn’t pass this up!

David’s Ensemble:
