The A.K. Rikk’s family is a close-knit group with many different roles and personalities. All of us acquire inspiration that holds major influence on our personal style. That inspiration can come from anywhere – be it travel, culture, designers, art, street-wear, magazines, or architecture. The best part of working in our family atmosphere is the opportunity to grow and share unique perspectives with each other. Join us throughout our Behind the Seams with A.K. RIKK’S series as we offer you the stories of the unique individuals who make A.K. RIKK’S exceptional.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan! Morgan lived in Chicago for three years and loved exploring the cities museums, restaurants, and neighborhoods gathering inspiration while studying Fashion Business at Columbia College. In March, Morgan moved back to her hometown of Grand Rapids to join the A.K. Rikk’s family as a Personal Shopper. Morgan loves that her career introduces her to so many people and the opportunity to take her clients confidence to the next level by helping them feel great about what they are wearing. She states, “As a Personal Shopper at A.K. RIKK’S, I have the best of the best designers at my finger tips which gives me a deeper connection to the fashion industry. Derby Days with A.K. Rikk’s!

May 5, 2014

On Saturday, May 3rd, 2014 a few members of the A.K. crew went down to Chicago to attend the GQ + Woodford Reserve Derby Event. The Godfrey Hotel’s new venue, the I | O Urban Roofscape was the perfect spot to host all of the fashionable and (dare we say it?) dandy guests. We clinked our festive copper glasses with a number of great people including bloggers from The Chicago Chic, local Chicagoans, and the awarded best-dressed guests of the night. Check out our looks as well as a few of our favorite moments from the night!

In Case You Missed It!!!!!!!

April 28, 2014

A few months ago, we got a call from a woman inquiring about some information on the A.K. Rikk’s women’s department. Among the questions were basic facts like how large of a store we were, how long had we been carrying women’s, and had we ever been featured in the press before (namely larger publications or national/international magazines). That’s when our ears really perked up. Turns out that the woman calling was as a research journalist from non-other than Elle Magazine! After speaking back and forth a few times via email and by phone, we had painted quite a picture of who is and what is A.K. Rikk’s. With no official confirmation, we scoured the internet daily for the tiniest hint of being published and checked the magazine racks until the May issue finally came out. The day came, and there we were! Page 58 in the May 2014 issue of one of the top US women’s fashion magazines! We could not have been more humbled or excited. Thank you, Elle Magazine for the wonderful feature! Check out the full article below!

Elle’s Top Shop: A.K. Rikk’s, 6303 28th Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546;616-957-3242.

WHAT’S THERE: Owner Richard Gaby founded it in 1986 as a men’s store; he has since included women’s wear and home goods, with the goal of becoming Michigan’s premier contemporary lifestyle destination. The 28,000-square-foot space stockpiles cool-kid classics from Alexander Wang, Rick Owens Dark Shadow, and Jason Wu, and Euro showstoppers Valentino and Salvatore Ferragamo.

All the Single (Strap) Ladies

March 15, 2013

Single-strap stilettos are THE shoe for spring. Images of women wearing them with boyfriend jeans, leggings, skinny jeans, and even work suits are floating around fashion blogs, magazines, and Pinterest. Versatile, sexy, and sophisticated, every designer has their rendition of this shoe. Over the past month we’ve been receiving the shoe from different vendors and we’re proud to show you our collection!

Shown above (from left to right): Alexander Wang, Alexander Wang, rag & bone, Alexander Wang, Tibi, and Tibi.

We’re so happy with our selection because of its range of colors, their ability to be dressed up or down, and how classic they all are. Which shoe would you choose?

Feelin’ Blue

February 27, 2013

We’re feelin’ a little blue here at A.K. Rikk’s but it’s not because we’re under the weather! Although there are plenty of hot colors this spring, blue is a major one. Looking around the store, it’s as if there are little blue puddles everywhere.

So let’s jump in them!

We have beautiful ocean-inspired dresses from Tibi, florals from Marc Jacobs, blue knits and tees from rag & bone, caftans from Cynthia Vincent, a 60s inspired dress from Alice + Olivia, and all-shades of blue denim from Hudson Jeans. Fellas, I did not forget about you. There are plaid Eton button-ups, blue-leather Ferragamo loafers, tees from Splendid Mills, turquoise bracelets from M. Cohen, and Nudie Jeans with blue stitching instead of the orange!

Phew! So, we might have more than little blue puddles… more like pools? So, instead, let’s go for a dive!

What I want for Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2013

Since countless commercials, ads, and websites have taken the liberty of telling dudes what to get their ladies for Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d just put out there what I want for Valentine’s Day.

Don’t waste your money on the open-heart diamond collection from Kay Jewelers. Every kiss begins with A K. All right, all right- I’m done. I’ll just cut to the chase.

Let’s tackle this give-her-lingerie thing. You’re really cute and all, but I’d rather get something fun that I can wear under blouses and sweaters and not just for you. Helmut Lang has these adorable asymmetrical bras that add something extra to an outfit without screaming, “HEY LOOK AT MY BRA!” Plus I bet they’re just as fun to take off.

Let’s go on vacation. Before you roll your eyes, I realize that asking for a vacation for Valentine’s Day is a little much. I’m not going to sit here like a princess expecting you to pay for an entire trip, but getting me something that lets me know that you want to travel with me is incredibly sweet. Cynthia Vincent’s entire resort collection screams beach, waves, and sand so when I pull that caftan out of the box, first I’ll kiss and thank you, but then I’ll ask you to pass me my laptop, we’re planning a trip.

Please don’t buy me some crazy diamond tennis bracelet that cost you multiple trips to the sperm bank as a donor. If you are going to get me jewelry, why not make it something a little less extravagant, but just as pretty? Marc by Marc Jacobs has some classic pieces, like their Katie Link bracelet, that I can pair with a variety of jewelry I already own.

Lastly, flowers die. They’re pretty, but they die. I mean, you can still get me flowers and I’ll like them, but they will die. Instead, try something creative and get me “flowers” but in a different way. rag & bone has a variety of spring pieces featuring bold florals. How fun would it be to get a bouquet of floral-printed pieces?! Pretty damn fun.

Grammy Highlight

February 11, 2013

Have to love seeing Mr. Lovett of Mumford and Sons in all rag & bone last night! Probably played a small part in the stylish band winning best album. Bombardier jacket, Grosvenor waistcoat, Blade jeans and Rowan boot! If you want to see these items up close, you need to get in to see what spring looks like!
