Let’s Talk About Dress Code..

April 24, 2014

With spring rolling in and summer just around the corner, its seems as though the event invitations are finally starting to pile up. With most events, there usually is an intended dress code. Dreaded by some, looked forward to by others. Who are you? Take a look at this short but to-the-point list on what those dress code terms might actually mean. When in doubt though, don’t hesitate to call us!

Black Tie

A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates. A little black dress is completely appropriate for black tie functions.
Formal usually means the same as Black Tie, but in some trendier cities like New York or Los Angeles, it could mean a black shirt, no tie with a tux. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.
A White Tie or Ultra-formal invitation requires men wear full dress, a black tailcoat, waistcoat, a wing collar shirt and a white bow tie. Women wear long gowns.

Black Tie Optional

A Black Tie Optional gives you the option of wearing a tuxedo or formal dress, but it should clue you into the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option. Women wear cocktail, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

Runway For Charity

May 20, 2013

Its been a little over a week now since Runway For Charity. In the meantime, Blair turned 50 (YAY!), Mothers Day happened (Love you mom!), and we set up another private event for Hush Puppies of Wolverine World Wide as they hosted their annual buyers event party (Can we go to sleep NOW?!). Almost everything has been packed away, picked up or dropped off. Our employees almost fully recovered from the fun. Safe enough to say were just about back to the original order of the distinguished old A.K. Rikks again.

To recap the event, we just held the most amazing charity fundraising event we could possibly imagine. In 2011 formerly called The Design 1 Fashion Event, there were over 500 attendees and the event raised $25,000. Partnering again with Design 1 Salon Spa, Aura Skincare & Cosmetics, The Matthew Agency, and then adding Visbeen Architects, and Conduit Studios set us up for something bigger than ever. Our goal for this year changed to raising $100,000. At the time was a seemingly challenging enough goal. We then experimented by adding a raffle to the mix to bring in a little extra for the hospital. Many of the attendees at our event had been to charity events before and like us find regular raffles to feel unlucky and unexciting. So we decided to up the ante by making the Runway for Charity raffle one enormous prize to awaken a desire in folks to enter to win this raffle, and raise money for the hospital. People who were unable to attend the fashion show were also allowed to enter.

Also, the snowball effect of the prize on the donors was evident. Once a vendor heard what someone else was donating, they wanted to participate. The donors were so gracious we were capable of making it an entire lifestyle package finding donations for many areas of life: food, travel, health, attire, drink, furniture, etc.The uniqueness of this raffle certainly proved beneficial for fundraising and helped us raise another large sum of our grand total! Raising $245,200 just under a quarter of a million dollars for The Helen DeVos Childrens Hospital suprised us all! Thank you to everyone who came, saw, and helped us conquer this amazing feat! And another huge congratulations to Mark & Barbara Gerson, the winners of our outrageous raffle! We genuinely hope that you enjoyed yourself and our night of sweetness! We can not wait until next year!

Runway for Charity

April 1, 2013

With only six weeks away from the event date, it’s about time we introduce you to Runway for Charity! On May 11th, 2013, A.K. Rikk’s, Design 1 Salon Spa, and Visbeen Architects will be hosting a fashion show raising money for the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. I had the privilege of meeting a doctor who recently moved from overseas in order to work at the children’s hospital. He explained to me how vital philanthropy was for the cardiovascular department that is trying to expand so that they can stop being forced to send patients elsewhere. While construction is done for the outside of the shiny, new outside of the hospital, the inside of the hospital is still growing and is very much so reliable on charity. Please help us meet our goal at raising $100,000 for such a good cause!

So here’s the low-down on the event:

WHERE: A.K. Rikk’s: 6303 28th Street, Grand Rapids, MI 49546

HOW MUCH: tickets can be bought at A.K. Rikk’s and at any Design 1 Salon Spa slaon. The easiest way to purchase them is online at:

WHEN: May 11th, 2013, from 7-11 pm

I know that Grand Rapids has had it’s fair share of fashion shows the past few years… but here are some reasons as to why this fashion show is different from the rest and THE event you do not want to miss:

1) THE RAFFLE: This is the biggest difference from last year’s fashion show, A RAFFLE. And it’s not the type of raffle where you win a year’s supply of Britta Filters (you only change those once every 36 weeks!!) or something else obscure. There are a variety of donated prizes in this raffle- all adding up to $100,000- do you know how crazy that is? And they are amazing prizes: a week’s stay in the Bahamas, a golf membership, gift certificates, a car lease, and more! Each raffle ticket is $100, and ONE TICKET WILL WIN! That’s it. Seriously. We only have a limited amount of raffle tickets to sell, so you better pick some up soon!

2)THE CLOTHES: We take such pride in having close relationships with customers. Through these close relationships we’ve not only all become friends through the years, but we also get to know their tastes, hobbies, and goals that help us choose clothing for them and their lives. At this fashion show, we get to display all of the wonderful brands and gorgeous clothing we choose for our customers. People can see their Kate Spade shoes they just bought a week ago on the runway, or perhaps the Isaia jacket they’ve been looking at the past month. It’s like seeing a necklace you bought or want to buy on some popular sitcom on TV. It’s a different way to present clothing to our customers.

3) THE PARTY: Let’s all be honest. There have been a couple charity events that we’ve all been to and it’s just a smidge boring. I’m sorry! It’s true. What’s so unique about this charity event is that it’s going to be quite the party. We have DJ SlimTim back for another event- and who here can raise their hand and say they’ve never danced their ass off when he was DJing (while maybe possibly being a little intoxicated- who knows)? But, before you’re all like-  “but charity events have to be boring because… well they’re charity events!” we want to reiterate that 100% of the proceeds go to Helen DeVos Children’s hospital, and we want to celebrate that.

4) THE ENTERTAINMENT: Now I’m not going to give this one away because it should be a surprise but I will say that there will be some amazing entertainment so you won’t be sitting there for twenty minutes watching each model walk down the runway- reminding you that you skipped the gym yesterday and that was a big mistake. The fashion show is going to produced by Jerrad Matthew from The Matthew Agency. There will be entertainment mixed in, keeping things fast, upbeat, and not boring.

As something we’ve been working on for months, we are beyond excited for this event and we want you to share the experience with us. We hope you join us on May 11th!
